The Change in Waves

In the United States, the radio started to transmit music and verbal messages around the early 1900’s during the start of the Roaring Twenties. As the use of the radio’s began to spread into every home that could afford one, the common stations had to deal with politics, sports, and even a few shows that you could listen too. Each local community had a radio station that captured events and culture that was going on near you, along with a few other music stations. As the advancement of technology took of in the 1920’s, the radio made its way into automobiles and in the 1930’s the FM radio wave was brought to life. The transition of the radio into cars, the invention of the television, and the popularity of this new phenomenon called the Internet; the ways to receive news and entertainment went from a hundred to a few thousands. The internet and television made the experience more visual and interactive that the radio could ever be with the limitations of only verbal broadcasting. Having the local news and sports details broadcasted in cars and online, created a trend wear people didn’t use the radio as their main source for information.

On the contrary, with the commuting distances reaching longer distances for drivers, the number of listeners began to grow. Coming in to the twentieth century, most radio stations were now controlled by large companies instead of the local radio guys and now had a broader array of stations to listen to. The radio was now a place were people could listen too: sports, all genres of music, world news, local news, traffic, weather, church hearings, and different types of talk shows. This created a road block and obstacles  for those voices who wanted to be heard, but were to small to grab the attention of a large audience. The locally run radio stations were bought out to remain in business and had to follow the new regulations put up by the corporations. At Chapman University, we have a school radio station that discusses campus activities and messages that the school feels the students need to hear. The station is broadcasted live, but then recorded to be placed on the school website. The difference between a college radio station and a station run by a corporation; is the corporation station has a more broad area of coverage, were as the college is only discussing about information regarding the University.
